His Loveliness Uplifts

Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; celebrate his lovely name with music.

PSALM 135:3 NLT

You’re down. It’s been an awful week. Everything that could go wrong did, and you’d love to escape to somewhere void of problems and hassles—just for a day. Even for a moment!

You dress for church and enter the sanctuary, greeting some friends and acquaintances along the way. Time to put on a smile, no matter how I feel, you think. Then the music starts. At first, you reluctantly join in. But before long, you begin to immerse yourself in praise. The music and lyrics lift your burdens as you focus on Jesus rather than yourself. Joy comes, perhaps for the first time all week, or in weeks! What a relief! What a pleasure as you, together with other believers, celebrate the Lord with music.

Good music produces a positive heart and frame of mind. Maybe that’s why King David loved music so much. He was a poet and musician and expressed his feelings, thoughts, and love for God through his lyrics and instruments. The book of Psalms overflows with his compositions.

As Christians, we often turn to Psalms for comfort or relief, just as we turn to Christian praise music to elevate us beyond our earthly trials, if only for a few moments.

God gives us a reprieve when we sing His praises. He alone is lovely, and His loveliness pours into our barren lives just when we need it. So sing! He is “altogether lovely.”
