The weather was getting warmer. Louise took off her raincoat and unzipped the woolly lining. She put the coat back on and carried the lining. Katy took off her wet rain hat and stuffed it into her pocket. Then she took off her coat. She was wearing a sweater under it.

“As soon as we find a good place for our picnic, we’ll take off the boots,” Katy said.

A few steps more brought them to a garden. Yellow roses bloomed on a bush beside them. Katy bent down to pull off her boots.

Louise yanked her upright again. “Katy Turner, this is probably the backyard of another big house with a dog.”

“You’re right,” they heard a deep voice say. “What are you doing here?”

A man wearing overalls stood in front of them. He was holding a rake and frowning.

Both girls had the same idea. They took two steps toward the man. By the time they finished the second step they couldn’t see him anymore.

“Do you suppose we walked through him?” Katy asked.

“I didn’t feel it if we did.” Louise looked around. Now they were standing on a hilltop. Rolling wooded hills were all around them. “This looks like a great place for a picnic,” Louise said.

Katy looked at the hills in the distance. “I wonder if we can just step from hill to hill. Let’s try.”

It was a lovely idea. Together the girls began to walk across the range of hills. Suddenly the hills were gone. A few steps more and they were on a flat plain.

“Let’s go back, Katy,” Louise said. “I liked the hills better.”

“Oh, we’ll come to some more hills,” Katy said.
