I tell Dolly I’d like her to see Mount Auburn Cemetery. This is New England’s oldest garden cemetery. I do want to show Dolly the place, which is one of the most beautiful places in greater Boston, the sort of place where you can feel the cycles and patterns of the seasons all contained in something deep and true and enduring. But in truth, I absolutely must go to the cemetery today because if I have another conversation with one of my neighbors, I will die. I must take my gregarious sister someplace where there is nobody for her to talk to.

We spread our blanket on the first hill, not far from the grave of R. Buckminster Fuller. I am feeding fruit and cheese to my children and starting to relax when Dolly says, in that lilting, lovely voice that ought to be on the radio, “Milo! Come and see what I found!” She lifts up my chunky two-year-old. On top of one of the monuments is a robin’s nest with three blue eggs.

I turn suddenly and glimpse something dark at the edge of my vision. Dolly is telling Milo all about the world, about birds, and eggs, and children. She is trying to read the dates on every single monument, treating my quiet sanctuary like a history lesson, and my son like he is the most important thing around. And this is the moment when I see her just at the edge of my vision, disappearing around a corner with her red ponytail swinging. I see my mother, as vivacious as the spring, and the lilacs, and the mud-splattered animals she loved.
