Her words are a sledgehammer to the chest. I actually scared her? I feel numb. I should stop, but like a glutten for punishment, I have to know everything. “How long have you been wanting to leave, Cora?” I barley recognize my voice.

“At least six months,” she whispers.

“Six months?” I rub my beard. How have I been so damn blind? “Why?”

“Because I’m tired.” She shakes her head and slips from the bed. “I never knew a person could be this damn exhausted and miserable.” She pauses.

My eyes are drawn to her stomach. I can’t see a change yet, but knowing there’s a new life growing inside her that changes everything.

“You know what it feels like to be trapped somewhere you don’t want to be, but know you need to be? Knowing that going after what you want will affect the people you love the most?”

“Yeah, I think I do know something about that,” I say.

“Maybe you do,” she whispers.

“Cora, what do I need to do to fix this?” I ask.

“I don’t know.”

“Then we should figure it out.” I sit up, swing my legs over the side of the bed and grip her hips. “Stop running. I’m here, I’m listening and I’m ready to change. I hear you now. I couldn’t then.”

“And what’s going to keep us from getting there again,” she asks, clearly frustrated.

“Me.”

“You can’t promise that.”

“Yes, I can. You ever know me to break my promises?” I place a hand on my chest.

“One, you left.” Her eyes are full of accusations she doesn’t voice.

“I’m sorry I let you down. But it’s not a habit I’ve made.”

“You weren’t there when I needed you most.”

“Now, who’s hanging on to the past?”

Her eyes widen.

“I made mistakes. I can’t take them back, but I can try not to repeat them. You should’ve told me, Cora. You can’t keep shit like this in.”

“And what about Wesson?” she asks.

“What about them?” I shrug.

“Come on, we both know you’re going to take the crown back.”

“What do you want me to do? Leave Wesson? Remain Nomad?”

“No,” she yells.

“Then what? You asked me here to work things out, but it seems like you already made up your mind. I told you we were forever. That means I’m not going to let you walk away, Cora.”

“Maybe it’s not up to you.”

I pull her between my legs and lick a path between her breasts. She shivers. “It’s not up to me? You’re full of my seed, my baby and you’re standing in front of me in nothing. What we have isn’t something that can be ignored. You want to be pissed at me? Make me grovel, sleep on the couch and change my selfish ass ways, fine. But don’t think for a second we could be parted so easily. I told you when we first started this was forever and I meant it.”

“Maybe forever isn’t that easy.” She looks down at the floor.

“Of course it isn’t, nothing worth having is. We know that well.” I kiss her belly. “That doesn’t mean it’s impossible.
