Nicole was not scared of the dark forest. She felt like a kid on a playground, protected by the adults who were keeping an eye on every move she made.

She wasn’t even paying much attention to her surroundings as she continued to think about Alex: about his green eyes, tender smile enriched by cute dimples and about his words that had touched the wound in her soul.

I will not betray anybody If I go on a date with Alex, after all, up there somewhere, he wants me to be happy.

“Nicole, turn left when you cross the bridge,” she got the instructions through the ear-bug.

“Yes, yes Alex, I’m going.”

She was impressed by Maine’s softwood pine forest and the river that she crossed.

C’mon lion, where are you? I have some blood you might like.

As she said those words, she heard a howl coming from the small hill.

“Alex, I think I heard a howl,” she reported to the team, and then put an electro-shocker in her hand.

“We are not picking up anything through thermo-scan. Maybe it’s blocked by the hill. Stay where you are.”

“Roger that.”

Oh, come on alpha; let me see your protein domains.

“Still nothing, but the protection team will come in visual range.”

“Acknowledged.”

After ten minutes there was no any sign of danger. The team decided to continue with the planned route and Nicole continued to walk by the river in disappointment of missing action.

As her faith in the idea of the blood samples stapled on the backpack slowly diminished, her legs seemed heavier with each step she took.

“Alex, why don’t I go through the forest instead of walking on the clear river path?” she said into the microphone attached by the collar.

“Safety first. It is easier to have visual confirmation of your status. Besides, you don’t want to be ‘little red riding hood’ by not staying strictly on the path.”

“’Little red riding hood didn’t have an electro-shocker in her pocket. I’ll take a quick tour in the same direction, a few yards deeper in the woods. I won’t go any farther.”

“You really enjoy your stubbornness, don’t you?”

“Well, it is part of my scientific spirit; otherwise I wouldn’t be a good scientist, would I?”

“Just keep contact with me in case there is any sign of trouble, even if you don’t like the direction of the wind.”

“Will do.”

Nicole started to walk deeper into the forest. After a hundred yards she continued to walk in the same direction of the river flow.

“Nothing here Alex. Apparently, he is not turned on by the blood I took. I think I am giving up.”

“Your enthusiasm disappeared?”

“Since my ideas are not working, I don’t see a reason why should I spend the night in the forest while using your resources. Diana was right, we don’t need me here. Let’s arrange a checkpoint, and you can pick me up there.”

“Glad I’ll see you in one piece. I am sending a Jeep to the bridge you crossed,” Alex said.

Nicole could tell that he was smiling over the microphone.

“Great, I’ll be there in ten minutes.
