Act Two

Berlin.

A small, very elegant salon. Back left, the main entrance door. Side doors left and right. On the backwall, over the fireplace, in a sumptuous brocade frame, LULU’s portrait as Pierrot. Right front, a few armchairs round a small Chinese table. Many pictures, some unfinished, in pretty gold frames. Right, a carved ebony writing desk.

SCHWARZ in an armchair, right front. Holds LULU on his knee. Brush and palette beside him on the carpet.

LULU (in eau-de-Nil dressing-gown with a very low-cut neck – evading his advances.) In the middle of the morning.

SCHWARZ. But you’re mine.

LULU. You’re horrible.

SCHWARZ. Can I help it?

LULU. You’re murdering me.

SCHWARZ. Your own fault.

LULU (hiding her face in his chest.) Wait.

SCHWARZ. Till it’s winter?

LULU. Till this evening.

SCHWARZ. Evening’s started.

LULU. And then can I have all of you?

SCHWARZ. What more do you want?

LULU. You … you.

SCHWARZ. But I’m yours.

LULU. Till we’re free.

SCHWARZ. Isn’t it all the same?

LULU. No.

SCHWARZ. Please.

LULU. Like children.

SCHWARZ. Like children.

LULU. It’s a sin.

SCHWARZ. Then let’s sin.

LULU. You can do that on your own.

SCHWARZ. I’ve never done that. (Tries to hitch up her dress.)

LULU (holds her dress firmly below her knees – so that her dark green slippers fall from her feet). I’ll tell you –

SCHWARZ. You’re not nice.

LULU (kisses him). You get sweeter.

SCHWARZ. I’m too sweet.

LULU. Not by a long way.

SCHWARZ. So you say.

LULU. You know.

SCHWARZ. I just have to hear your feet –

LULU (kisses him). Darling.

SCHWARZ. – to say to hell with it!

LULU. I’ll go barefoot.

SCHWARZ. Ah that’s all I need.

LULU. I don’t want to wear you out.

SCHWARZ. I’ll die happy.

LULU (kisses him). Then what would be left for me?

SCHWARZ (shakes himself). Oh … Eve …

LULU. Wait … I’ll tell you something.

SCHWARZ. A newspaper headline?

LULU. A surprise.

SCHWARZ. Surprises give me the jitters … every day I’m afraid the world will end … I wake up afraid that before the day’s out you’ll be bitten by a mad dog … I’ll shake all day because there might be a revolution – and tomorrow I’ll shake because an insect bite or something could end our happiness for ever – I can’t even pick up a newspaper – I can hardly bring myself to go down in the street.

LULU resting on his chest, whispers in his ear.

SCHWARZ. It’s not possible!

LULU (sits up smiling). Ugh …

SCHWARZ. You’re a mother?

LULU. Not yet.

SCHWARZ (embracing her fiercely). Eve – Eve – my Eve –

LULU. I wanted so much to go on drifting in the clear blue sky just a little longer.

SCHWARZ. No – you make me so happy!

LULU (covering her face). You’re heartless!

SCHWARZ. I’m the opposite!

LULU. I wanted so much just to wait quietly.

SCHWARZ. Thanks thanks my darling – all my thanks.

LULU (pulling herself up). It’s all your doing.

SCHWARZ. It’s yours ten times more.

LULU. We won’t fight over it.

SCHWARZ. And after all you did.

LULU. It’s too late to change it.

SCHWARZ. Is it sure?

LULU. Since two weeks.

SCHWARZ. And you could keep quiet so long?

LULU. I spent half the nights crying myself to sleep.

SCHWARZ. The one happiness we still didn’t have!

LULU. I tried everything.
