Chapter 23

Starr spent the entire ride back to the federal detention center pissed. She wondered why Diamond hadn’t taken a few moments to brief her representation. She knew Diamond had the Spalding trial going on, but she figured Diamond would have at least set aside some time to show up herself just to save face instead of just sticking her with some half-assed lawyer with no balls in a cheap suit. Starr was sure Diamond would get to the bottom of everything and get her out but there was no doubt in her mind that games were being played. Starr knew she couldn’t afford to lose her cool and show her hand. Seeing Monica was the only thing that kept her from blacking out on the lawyer and in the courtroom. Monica looked resilient. There was no denying she was physically attracted to her.

As Starr arrived back to the holding facility, she was brought in, stripped, and placed back into her pumpkin-colored jumper. She didn’t even care. She was ready to go back to her freezing single cell that she was forced to get used to. To her surprise, she was informed that she would be going upstairs to general population instead, as long as she promised to behave while she was up there. Starr laughed on the inside at how they tried to make it seem like a favor to her, instead of revealing the fact that they couldn’t legally justify holding her in the “dry cell” for much longer. She knew with Diamond as her lawyer, it would only be a matter of time before they started playing fair before they jeopardized whatever they thought they had on her.

The feds purposely requested that Starr be sent to the roughest women’s pod. Starr was escorted down the long tunnel and into an elevator, along with two young white girls who had been arrested for seven counts of check fraud and ten counts of identity theft. Based on the conversation she had heard, Starr discovered that the one girl, Kathy, a short, pale-skinned, redheaded girl with a pretty face and ass and hips like a sista, was charged with a breach of federal security. She was a vicious computer geek turned hacker and could practically break through the digital firewalls of any security system she wanted. She had been all through the FBI’s and the CIA’s personal databases, just to finish a report for her midterm paper.

Margaret, a shapely and busty pale-skinned blonde, with hips like a black girl and the height and posture of a model, was the one who put the plan together. Kathy and Margaret were juniors attending the same college. When Margaret learned of Kathy’s skills, she began to manipulate her into pulling off white-collar scams. Margaret was the brains. It was apparent to Starr that neither of them were the muscle of their operation. She could tell they were both terribly frightened. Starr watched both girls clutch their bedrolls tight during the entire elevator ride to the eighth floor.
