Chapter 3

~CHARLIE~

“Shut it. And goodnight.”

Violet swished by me, mumbled something to Clara sitting next to me at the bar then fled out of The Cauldron like a demon was after her.

Maybe I was a bit too pushy with her tonight. I glanced back at Nico, her sexy AF werewolf business partner, as he crooned into the microphone on the stage. He had a harsh look about him tonight. I wondered what Violet had said to him.

All I’d told her was that it was time she stopped beating around the goddamn bush and jumped that hunk of man. He wanted her. I knew it. Everyone knew it. And she wanted him. But Violet was stubborn as fuck.

Which reminded me that she told me I was stubborn too. Not only that. She’d revealed something I didn’t know. That she’d done a reading about me and JJ. Violet was a Seer, the kind of witch who could see visions and make predictions. And she’d told me flat-out that the two of us belonged together.

I watched JJ talking to a customer in his friendly way. He was so handsome my lungs seized up, and I couldn’t catch my breath. My chest tightened if I stared too long. His hazel eyes snagged on me for a few seconds, the connection intimate in a way I hadn’t felt before, then he returned his attention to the customer.

“You okay?” Clara asked.

She’d been entertaining the new tattoo artist Lindsey, since Violet had bailed on hosting her first night in town. Lindsey had slipped off to the bathroom.

“Yeah, why?” I removed the cocktail straw from my Poison Apple Sangria. JJ always made the best sangrias.

“Your aura is telling me that you’re confused and sad about something.”

“My aura talks to you?”

Clara’s blue eyes glittered brightly under the bar lights. “Not with words, but yes. My magic speaks to me. I’m pretty sure I know what all this is about.”

“Really?”

“Ninety-two percent sure.”

Only Clara would have such a high and yet strangely not high enough percentage of surety about something.

I smiled. “I’d love to find out if you’re in the eight percent of wrong or not.”

She blinked twice, her expression becoming far graver than I was accustomed to seeing on Clara. She was the worry-free Savoie sister, always joyful and serene. But right here before me in a crowded, loud bar, her eyes welled with tears.

“Charlie,” she whispered. “You’re confused because you’re with the wrong man. You’re sad because your heart knows it.”

The air vacated my lungs. My pulse rocketed with a jolt of adrenaline.

“What?” I asked, my voice so low it was little more than a puff of air.

She placed her hand on mine but didn’t try to spell me as she had before when she wanted to me happy. Instead, she blinked again and a tear trekked down her rosy cheek. My chest ached at the sincere sorrow pouring off her.

“You belong with JJ.” She gave me a sweet smile. “And he belongs with you.”

“But he—”

She squeezed my arm and shook her head.
