CHAPTER 1

Snack rings the doorbell twice of the old white house. As he waits for someone to answer, he looks back to the car and motions for Tone to roll the passenger window down. As the window comes down, he yells, “A you, roll something up while I’m in here talking to Bra moms.”

Tone screams back over the music, “you only droppin off some money, you shouldn’t be that long. Hurry up. Don’t have me sittin out here that long. You know I’m dirty.”

“I got you – just roll up,” Snacks replied with a hint of aggravation in his voice. As Snacks turns around, the mother of his long-time friend Reese is standing in the doorway of the old house with her hand on her hip. For Ms. Cain to have been an older woman she looked good. She had wide hips and a set of double D’s that still somehow sat up without a bra in her old age. One look at Ms. Cain and you had to think about the saying. {The wine gets better with time.}

“Boy come in here out of that hot sun and give your second mother a hug,” she demanded with a huge smile on her face. “I ain’t seen you in a whole year.”

“I know Ma, I had to go away for a while. Things got a little hectic, if you know what I mean,” Snack informed her as they release from the tight embrace. Snacks always came through and made sure Reese’s mother was okay. They were like brothers and had been that way since they were kids. What made their friendship so special was they were both from Down Neck, the bottom section of Newark, also known as Down Bottom. But they were from different projects, Snacks being from Riverview Court and Reese being from Hyatt Court. This put a strain on their friendship because both hoods would beef hard. If the Hyatt crew caught someone from Riverview out bounds, they’d jump him and vice versa. But if Snacks was the one who was out of bounds and Reese was there, it was hands off and Snacks would do the same for him.

As time went on, the two stayed close and their bond would become unbreakable. Eventually, the Hyatt crew became an official Crip set, which only brought on a heap of trouble for the outsiders of that neighborhood and the members of the gang itself because as the violence grew in the neighborhood, so did the fear in people who lived there. It wasn’t long before the Feds came in and did a sweep and took most of the Crips away. Some stood tall when it was time to do the time, while others ran their mouth and told everything they knew. During this event, Reese took a plea of 144 months and was sentenced to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. This is what led to Snacks being Reese’s mother’s only support.
