Chapter Four

The stars blanketed the sky over the Rockies. Lights twinkled around her. It only took a moment for Chris to fall into a trance, staring at the heavens as she’d never seen them.

“Did you hear me?” Alexandria said, banking the chopper and shifting her in her seat. Bringing her back to reality.

Chris shook off her awe. “I’m sorry. Did you say something? I was just so caught up in the view.”

“We’ll be on the ground in about five. You okay? You’ve been quiet the whole trip.”

“Better than okay.” She turned to smile at her. “I’m just taking it all in. It’s hard to believe all this is happening. I feel so free. And up here….”

“It’s like there isn’t anything you can’t do. You feel powerful, don’t you?”

“Yes. The world always felt like a prison. I had to be aware of who could be around and what they might see. But, up here, it’s like I’m on top of the world, in charge, and if anyone did see, it wouldn’t matter. I totally get why you love this so much. You can be yourself up here.”

“God you’re sexy when you say things like that.” Alexandria reached out and grabbed her hand, giving it a quick squeeze before returning to the controls. “I’ve never had someone grasp why I love this so much, even other pilots. But you, you nailed it. This is uninhibited freedom. Stick around and I might even teach you how to fly my bird.”

“I plan on it.” Chris swallowed hard. Did Alexandria really feel the same way? They’d signed up for a one-night stand, not a happily ever after. Would it be wrong to admit she wanted more than one night with the beautiful pilot? The date had already gone further than she’d imagined. Still, she needed to share something. “I’ve never been with a woman before. Actually, I’ve never….” Been with anyone.

“Then it will be a first for both of us. All my experience, you read about in my journal. Not exactly bragging material.”

Chris twisted in her seat to look at the stunning woman piloting the chopper. It felt like a fairytale come true. So unreal. Was she living in a storybook and in for a rude awakening when the date ended? She had nothing to offer Alexandria. None of it made sense. People always said she had a pretty face, to avoid telling her she had a weight problem. Alexandria could be a supermodel. “Why me? You could have any woman with the snap of your fingers. I’m this frumpy, overweight school teacher without a life, or at least very little. You’re beautiful, rich, and intelligent. Sexy. All kinds of sexy, and I’m having a hard time understanding why me.”

“And lonely. You don’t get it do you? Everything about you flips my switch. You’re sweet, innocent, you took a chance and kissed me when no one else would have. Your heart and courage brought me back from the darkness. I heard every word you said, and you gave me a reason to fight.
