There’s nothing wrong with banging on the door of heaven or pestering the judge for action. It’s encouraged, not just once, but repeatedly. We’re allowed to refuse the evil coming upon us and to continue refusing if it doesn’t relent.

In the Bible, there are very few intellectual contortionists attempting to explain why faith didn’t “work”; when it doesn’t, it’s always shown as weak or sinful. Job is commonly mentioned as a counterpoint to this line of reasoning—if faith always overcomes evil, why did Job have to suffer so long? But faith isn’t a magic wand with instant results; it can be long and arduous. And though Job suffered at Satan’s hands, in the long run his faith did keep him from evil: He was given a double portion in the day of his restoration, and his faith is recorded in the eternal Word of God. That sounds like victory to me.

From Genesis to Revelation, bold faith is honored, and so is hatred for evil. The call of a disciple is a call to a holy resistance movement.
