I followed Locklan and Arawel like a faithful dog while they held hands and discussed their upcoming promotion to 'a higher species.' It didn't matter how much I hated them, how hard I fought against the oily blackness poisoning my insides, or how afraid I was that this curse had damaged the baby, I couldn't resist the compulsion to follow them. To obey his command to the letter.

Bile built in my throat, sickness twisting my stomach, but even my heightened emotions didn't bring my magic to the surface. Not this time.

Nico ... I'd left him behind. I'd promised to protect him and then I'd left him.

And Gray still hadn't responded to my pleas.

I couldn't imagine what Locklan and Arawel wanted from me now. Not until they led me to a tall door, the green colour of rust, and pushed it open. Fresh air hit my face and I gulped it down, the taste of fresh, growing things and saltwater like freedom on my tongue.

The freedom didn't last long. Ras had been wrong when he'd told us the shifter Lords just sat on their thrones and waited for their people to give them gifts of power. Sacrifices of magic. It wasn't done in the throne room. There was a special monument where it happened in the middle of a pale stone square.

I recoiled at the sight of the square blocks that made up the dais the monument sat upon, all stained a dark brown.

Blood.

Seventy-two, the air spirit whispered inside my mind, her voice as soft as feathers.

Months of speaking to Gray mind to mind had prepared me for this, for not giving the two psychos controlling me any hint that I'd bound myself to a millennia-old thing.

Seventy-two what? I hissed, my fraught nerves making me sharper than I probably should have been to someone who was older than England itself.

Sacrifices, she replied mournfully. All spilled on this stone so the Lords can absorb it.

The Lords, I repeated, trying to keep my expression blank as I followed Locklan and my grandmother, blinking in surprise at the two hundred people crammed into the square as if this was a free Green Day gig and not a bloodletting. Big fans of bloodletting, Arawel and Locklan. They probably had T-shirts with BLOOD IS THE NEW BLACK on them, maybe with matching mugs. What about Arawel? Does she get any of the power?

Sips that Locklan gives her.

Interesting.

This new hope was dangerous, though. If I gave into it and tried to escape, to bring down Arawel and the Lords, it would backfire. I wouldn’t just fail, but get Nico killed for my disobedience. I had to be careful.

No, I had to behave.

If you behave, Wind Lady murmured, we'll all be dead by sunset.

I hadn't asked for a running commentary on my thoughts, but sure. You said you'd unbind my power?

All in good time, she said mysteriously. These things need to be timed to perfection so you don't lose your sweet hound.

Well, at least we were on the same page with keeping Nico alive.
