Chapter 6

Victoria peered through the window, watching Alejandro sulk back to his shop. Could she blame him? When he asked to meet her brother, she rejected the idea with enough force to put anyone off. She didn’t know what state she would find her brother in, though. The last thing she wanted was for a belligerent drunk to run off the man she was falling for.

The thought made her smile. She was falling for Alejandro… and she didn’t mind admitting it. Of course, that didn’t mean she wanted to try to do so right now. She turned, fists planted firmly on her hips.

“What are you doing here, Lucas?”

“What am I doing here?” Her brother drawled the words out, confirming her suspicions. “What do you think I’m doing here? Didn’t you get my letter?”

“Only this morning!”

“Good. Then you knew I was coming.”

Victoria heaved with exasperation. “Luc, one afternoon is hardly enough time to prepare for someone’s arrival.”

“Especially when you’re busy entertaining others,” her brother countered. “Who was that anyway?”

“That was the man who owns the sweet shop across the street.”

“Oh, yes. Nacho told me about him.”

“Nacho? You’ve spoken with him?”

“Of course, I did. He and his wife, our new cousin Josefina. What do you think of her?” He waved away his own question. “Never mind that. Who do you think let me in and put up my little bag? I can’t walk through walls, you know.”

Only windows.

Victoria suddenly remembered a time when her brother was so determined to get a drink that he broke into a saloon by throwing a rock through the window. The smell coming off him made her sure that he would do the same in his given condition if given the chance—which she most certainly wasn’t about to let happen. The last thing she wanted was for him to scare off the first man to ever show any real interest in her. Why couldn’t Nacho have invited her brother back to his home? She wasn’t able to stay in the new barn they had recently built, but it would have been more than suitable for her brother. She mentioned as much.

“I suppose we’ll figure out a sleeping arrangement of sorts.”

“Not necessary, sister dear. I can find my own lodging.”

Oh, she could just see it now—her newly arrived brother, stumbling through town. Not a chance!

“What kind of hostess—or sister, for that matter—would I be if I didn’t show you better hospitality than that? Besides, I’m sure you’ve traveled long and far. Not that I would know for certain, of course. I can’t quite recall the last place you were.”

“Oh, um… Out near a little place called Sweetwater. You ever hear of it?”

“Can’t say that I have. What were you doing out that way?”

“Just a little of this, a little of that.” Lucas hiccupped and his breathing slowed as his exhaustion grew obvious. “Real pretty place.”

“Then why did you leave?”

His eyes widened, but her question remained unanswered. With an exaggerated yawn, he stretched his arms wide. “It’s getting kind of late.
