Look at this sentence:
Andrea had studied for three hours before she fell asleep.
The subject is Andrea and the main verb is studied (the past participle form of study) . The helping verb had tells us that these events happened in the past.
Now, let's take a look at this sentence:
They had studied for three hours before they fell asleep.
When the subject is changed to they , the helping verb is still had .
We use the past perfect tense to talk about things that happened in the past before something else happened:
My cat had landed on the moon when NASA called.
You had practiced English when my cat meowed.
The birds had sung for 30 minutes when the sun rose.
The kids had played in the snow for 15 minutes when it stopped.
