Tuesday / DAY 198 COMPASSIONATE COMMUNICATION

COMPASSIONATE ALTERNATIVE: DON’T PUT THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE

This popular expression means “let’s not reverse the accepted order of things.” The first reference to this phrase in English comes in George Puttenham’s “The arte of English poesie” in 1589. Now, the phrase itself isn’t necessarily as violent as, say, “kill two birds with one stone” (see Day 2), but it is referring to horses being used for our purposes, so perhaps we can simply change it to: “Don’t put your shoes on before your socks” or “Don’t slice the bread before it’s baked.”
