Chapter 5: Drive Installation & Programming

As with any type of electronics the best installations are those where equipment can be kept clean, dry and reasonably cool. Most VFD’s have an operating temperature range of 0o – 40o C, or 32o to 104o F, and will also have a cooling fan integrated into the drive to provide airflow cooling over the heat sink. With any installation, ventilation and access for maintenance should be an important consideration. It makes troubleshooting all the more difficult when test measurements or adjustments must be make in a poorly lit, difficult to access area. If your drive is rated and setup properly, in all likelihood it will not require much attention for many years, but best practices would mandate good accessibility. Some common issues with VFD drives may be the need to periodically clean filter media in control cabinets, replace cooling fans, and make minor programming or parameter changes. So, - when you install a drive – make it as maintenance friendly as possible.
