Chapter Twelve

I wake up to a room with only me as its occupant. Damon is nowhere to be seen, making me wonder if something happened while I slept, forcing him to leave my side.

From the dim morning light filtering in from the balcony’s double doors, it’s easy to tell that another twilight hour is upon us. Today we travel into the Barrens to find more of the magic elixir Margaret used to cure the wolf pups in Midnight and help them regain their ability to transform between their wolf and human forms. Finding it could be the key to my freedom by diminishing Simon’s desire to make me his queen.

With this in mind, I hop out of bed and open my wardrobe to search for the outfit Margaret had made for me while I was away. Not only do I find the leather jacket and pants, I also discover five new dresses that are even prettier than the ones Anya destroyed.

Before I put the outfit on, I decide to take a quick bath since I haven’t bathed in a few days.

After I’m clean and dressed, I walk out of my room to discover the one person I didn’t expect to see: Anya.

She’s pacing up and down the hallway with her hands clasped tightly together. The look on her face is one of more than worry. She looks deathly frightened.

When she sees me, a quick, judgmental glance takes in my outfit before she meets my gaze with her own.

“Good morning,” she says with a small bow of her head.

I almost look behind me to see if Damon is standing there. Anya has never shown me any reverence and this new attitude is surprising.

“I realize I’m probably the last person you want to see, but I came here to ask you for a favor.”

This should be good.

I step into the hallway and close my bedroom door behind me.

“What kind of favor?” I ask, crossing my arms in front of me as I wait for the answer.

“I . . . I,” she stammers before clearing her throat nervously, “I came to ask you for your forgiveness.”

“Forgiveness for what exactly?” Of course I know what she’s referring to, but I want to hear her admit her crime.

Anya closes her eyes and takes in a deep breath as if she has to draw on all her strength to admit the truth to me.

“Out of my jealousy, I destroyed your dresses and left the remnants scattered across your bedroom. I can only beg for your forgiveness.”

“And?”

Anya looks perplexed. “And what?”

“You seem to have forgotten about putting poison ivy in my dress.”

Her cheeks turn red from either shame or embarrassment at being caught in yet another childish act.

“I’m sorry for that also,” she whispers, dropping her gaze from mine in shame. Whether or not she truly feels apologetic for her act, I’m not sure, but at least she has enough sense to appear remorseful.

“I can forgive you for what you did, but I’ll never forget it, Anya.”

Hesitantly, she returns her gaze to me.
