Jaxon

By the time we found a portal maker and got to Tarzi’s friend’s place, Del’s shoulders had slumped, and the fire had smoldered down. I wasn’t worried she’d run off anymore. I was surprised she was still walking unaided. I rubbed her shoulders as we approached the double-story brick townhouse of the building we’d be staying in and pushed comfort and peace down the mate bond. I felt her lean back into me as it got to her.

“Thanks,” she whispered, and I wrapped my arms around her. Her hand reached back and stroked my face. I wished I could give her more—shoulder her pain and worry in her place—but the mate bond couldn’t cure everything, and neither could I. We’d wanted more time together, but it felt like we’d been running since we got here. As worried as we were, we’d fight better with a recharge under our belt.

We looked at the large decorative wooden door to the place Tarzi had pointed out. The wood was carved in intricate fern-like patterns. Someone had put a lot of work into this place. I could only hope the sorcerer wouldn’t find us here and ruin it all trying to get in.

Letting Del go but keeping hold of her hand, I nodded to the door. “Looks like a nice place.”

“Yeah,” Del said, squeezing my hand.

Tarzi pulled a keychain out of her pocket and inserted one of the keys into the door. I felt a flare of power like the key also unlocked a magical barrier, then she pushed the door open.

We followed her inside. The hallway was cramped but beautifully decorated with fresh flowers on a side table. I couldn’t place their kind, but they smelled exotic.

I raised my eyebrows. “Did they know we were coming?”

Tarzi shook her head. “They always keep it like this. They’re anal about having the place ready to use at any moment. They even pay one of their kids extra to get over here twice a day and check on it.”

Ah, that must’ve been the scruffy child-sized demon who’d shoved the key into her hand not two minutes ago. “You’re sure we can trust these people not to blab to the demon lord?”

Zeke rolled his eyes and strolled over to the nearest doorway, peeking in at the bedroom. “Jaxon, can you never take anything that falls into your lap?”

“This is Hell, Zeke. Do you think everything here is going to be what it looks like?” These people seemed to be helping us at their own risk, but the demon lord had proven what good actors demons could be. We couldn’t trust them.

“No, but these are Tarzi’s friends,” Del said.

Zeke nodded. “And she saved our asses back at Del’s place. We can trust in that. She wouldn’t go through all that just to take us out by placing her trust in a dodgy friend.”

I . . . couldn’t fault his logic there, but I didn’t like the way he and Del were looking at each other—like they understood one another.
