Chapter Twenty-Six

Unfolding the map, Jeri rested it against a tree and looked at it. “I think we’re close.” She had no idea how to read a map without streets.

Trendan leaned over and looked over her head. “You have it upside-down.”

She closed her eyes for a second and then turned the map. “How does anyone do this without streets?”

His chuckle was right behind her head. “The position of the sun, the stars at night…”

“We have a map.”

His arm was beside her face as he reached over and put his hand on the map. “I believe we are on the wrong side of the river.”

“Really?” She blew out a breath. “It’s an hour to go all the way down and over the bridge.”

“We can walk along this side and see if we can find the spot.”

Turning, she looked at him. “And then what?”

He smiled. “We call an Alterealm royal to pop us over to it.”

“Oh. That would work.”

“Yes. Having friends from other realms seems to be paying off.”

He stepped back and watched as she folded the map and put it in the bag she’d thought to bring with a few drinks and snacks in it. “I hope we find it soon.”

“I’m in no rush to go back to the puzzle of bits and pieces we’re all trying to figure out.”

“How do you think the others are doing?” She stepped over a small rock and watched the ground. She was enjoying being out of the city but wasn’t sure what else was out there. If Tera was here, every bug, insect, and creepy thing would be following them.

“No calls, so I’m going to assume getting to the fathers is going well. I don’t know about the camera locations. I don’t think either of us would be called to help there.”

Jeri grinned. “No. I’m not exactly a warrior.”

“I can be. I just don’t know how to fight the way they do now.” He reached ahead of them and pulled the branches back, parting the thick growth in their path. “I know the Alterealm royals and guards fight with swords or similar weapons, but what I used…”

“I’ve seen.” she reminded him quietly.

“Ah, that’s right.”

They reached the river, and it seemed angrier than it had on their first trip. The rushing water was so loud this time it drowned out everything else. That was going to be the end of any conversation, she thought as she moved up the embankment.

Standing at the top of it, they both looked across the river. She tugged on his arm, so he’d lean down closer. “What are the chances that the archway will still be around?” She spoke loudly in his ear.

He looked at her. “Slim.” He shouted and then gave the river an annoyed look.

She nodded and started walking alongside the river. She split her attention between checking her footing and looking on the other side. If the archway was created by nature, the chances of it still existing three hundred years later were next to nothing.

She slipped, and strong arms wrapped around her to stop her from falling.
