Chapter 10

Sheriff Cafferty had all but accused Clare and Isaac of killing Trinity. He cast a glance at Clare. Her eyes were wide. Her brows were drawn together, and her lips were pressed into a colorless line. He knew she was worried, and she should be.

“There’re a few problems with your theory, Sheriff,” said Isaac.

“Enlighten me.”

“There’s not a lot to the town of Mercy. It wasn’t hard to figure out that Trinity was gone.” He sat back in his chair. “Clare found her broken necklace in a parking lot. It was enough to make us concerned, because Trinity never took it off. Ever.” Isaac leaned forward. “You’ve been up front about your suspicions. But I gotta tell you. You’re wrong to make up your mind already.”

“Okay, so if I shouldn’t make you two my prime suspects, who should I have in mind?”

The notion of giving away a year’s worth of work left him ill—especially since Newcombe had finally made contact. Yet, Isaac couldn’t exactly hinder a murder investigation. And finally, there was Clare. He still didn’t know much about her situation, but she was obviously running from something.

Or someone.

He couldn’t—no, make that wouldn’t—let her be suspected of murder. “For the past year, I’ve been working undercover in Mercy. I’m on assignment trying to find Decker Newcombe. He’s a hitman who killed a district attorney in Wyoming.”

The sheriff gave a grunt of disbelief. “I’m supposed to believe that you’re working undercover?”

“It’s the truth.”

“Now, you know I’m not going to take you at your word.”

“I figured as much.” He exhaled. “Go ahead and do a search for Decker Newcombe. You’ll see that he’s wanted for the murder of Jacob Loeb, the DA from Pleasant Pines, Wyoming.” Isaac paused as the sheriff removed his phone from a holster on his hip. As the sheriff typed with his thumbs, Isaac continued, “My gut told me that Newcombe would reach out to Ryan Steele at some point. Steele is one of his old contacts. I came up with a plan. The feds bankrolled all of Steele’s businesses, including the bar he owns in Mercy. Then, I posed as an employee at the bar, hoping Newcombe would make contact.”

The undersheriff leaned forward. “Everything you said about Newcombe’s past checks out. Still, it don’t mean I can verify a word you say. You could’ve done an internet search, same as me.”

Now was the time for Isaac to prove his bona fides. “Who do you know with the FBI? Anyone out of the San Antonio office?”

Glass and Cafferty exchanged glanced.

“We can find a name if you give me some time,” she said.

Isaac said, “Take all the time you need. I’m not going anywhere soon.”

“Damn right, you won’t. This door locks from the outside.” The sheriff rose to his feet. Undersheriff Glass stood as well. “You both just wait here. I’ll be back in a minute.”

Without another word, both officers left the room.

Then, the room was silent. He kept his gaze on the table, yet he could feel Clare watching him.
