USS St. Lo (CVE-63) is seen from USS Kitkin Bay (CVE-71) shortly after it was hit by a Zero-sen on October 25, 1944. The pilot that targeted St. Lo conducted a skilful attack, approaching over the stern. He dropped his bomb before the aircraft hit amidships and skidded off the flightdeck. The bomb penetrated to the hangar and caused fires and explosions there, as shown in this view. Less than 30 minutes after being hit, the carrier rolled over and sank with the loss of 114 crew. St. Lo was the first ship to be sunk by kamikazes. (NARA)
