Reese—You Say She’s Just A Friend
Clubbing was never my cup of tea, and going on Crenshaw was no longer an alternative as far as meeting men on the scene. Steve Harvey had a segment on his radio show called the dating game. One day I overheard him announce for people to send in their name and bio’s. I thought to myself, What the heck, why not? I have nothing to lose. I sent the bio over in November of 2004. They didn’t call me until January 2005. I went on the show, and I had never heard Steve Harvey give the participant’s full name. When he announced me, he gave my full name, Kennedee Devoe. I thought to myself, Oh Lord, now everybody and they mama going to know I am up here trying to get a date. It didn’t matter anyway, because the moment I opened my mouth, anyone that knew me from elementary up would know it was me. I have a very, very distinctive voice. I discussed what I was looking for and what I wasn’t looking for in a man. There were three callers that called in to get a date with me. The first prospect sounded promising, but after listening to the other two, I decided to get with that one. We were set to go out that night to Color Me Mine and the Water Grill in downtown LA.
I ended up getting a call from one of the radio station’s representatives. He said that my date cancelled, so they were setting me up with one of the other respondents, number three, who wasn’t even in the running. I knew right there I should have cancelled, but I went with the flow. I arrived back at the radio station at 6:00 p.m. to get chauffeured in a limo for our date.
There my date stood, frumpy and unattractive, with one rose in his hand. He asked, “Are you Kennedee?”
I felt like saying, “Hell no!” and running like Flo Jo. Instead, I said, “And you are?” This is how uninterested I was, because I can’t even remember his name. When the limo driver opened the door, I told him to skip Color Me Mine and take us straight to dinner. The driver obliged.
When we arrived, all I wanted to do was eat and get out of there. He could tell I wasn’t interested, yet he tried to make conversation. As he talked about himself, I realized we had absolutely NOTHING in common. So I asked, “What made you call in for the date?”
He said, “I heard the end of the interview, and you said you like scrapbooking, and it made me think of my mom. So I called.”
I thought to myself, Are you freaking serious? I rolled my eyes in the back of my head.
He said, “What’s wrong?”
I stated, “So let me get this straight: you didn’t even hear the entire interview, and that one thing prompted you to call?”
With a stupid look on his face, he said “Yes.
