Chapter Seventeen

"I think I figured it out," I say to Jackson.

"Figured what out?"

"How Brock plans to get his money back. I think everything you said is right. I think he gave my mom that money years ago and now he wants it back. He's probably in a lot of debt and panicking because he's running out of money. He doesn't want to have to sell his house and fancy cars because it'll make people think he's not successful. Like he's some washed-up celebrity like Devon. It's all making sense now."

"What's making sense?"

"Why he sent me to that counselor. Every time we have a session she asks stuffs about money, like how much my mom made from her art or how we lived, like she's trying to figure out how much of Brock's money is left. She also asked if my mom left me anything. I thought she meant something sentimental, like a piece of her jewelry or her art, but I think she meant money. She kept asking the same question in different ways, wanting to know if my mom left me anything. She was asking because she was hoping I'd tell her about the money."

"How does Brock know this woman?"

"He made Braden and Trystan go see her after the divorce. They only went a few times. But knowing him, he slept with her. Maybe he still is. All I know is he was very insistent I see her and nobody else. Even when I told him I didn't like her, he told me I still had to go there. He wouldn't let me see anyone else."

"You didn't tell him about this trip, did you?"

"No. He texted me asking where I'm at and I told him I'm looking for Devon. He keeps sending me texts saying I'm grounded when I get home but I'm ignoring him."

"Don't tell him where you are, and don't tell him about the bank."

"I won't, but what should I do?"

"Just leave the money where it is. When you're 18 you can claim it as your own. Brock won't be able to take it. Until then, you'll just have to pretend you don't know about it."

There's a knock on the door. It's Gretchen. "Rumor, can I come in?"

"Just a minute," I yell back.

"Call me later," Jackson says.

"I will. Bye." I go and open the door. "Do you need the office?"

"I finished up with my client and wanted to see if you needed anything." She looks at my unopened backpack on the floor. "I thought you were studying."

"Not yet. I was checking messages on my phone."

She walks around the stacks of files. "Sorry about the mess. We've been cleaning out the storeroom. Next is the vault. We're doing major renovations in a few months and we're trying to get prepared."

"You have a vault?"

"For our more expensive pieces. We put them away at night and on the days we're closed." She stops in front of me, a serious look on her face. "What you said last night reminded me of something.
