CHAPTER 14 AMBER

I feel like I’m having to double-check each instinct I have and each desire that follows it. Mark’s hand on my knee is enough to make my skin heat from head to toes and everywhere in between. It’s like each thudding pulse of his wrist spreads through me, promising me more of … something.

I’ve never felt anything close to this. His innocent touch does more to me than Koda’s kiss. And last night, Koda’s kiss was hot. Just like his promise not to tell my father, even though I know that’s not going to last forever. Not when it becomes obvious that it’s not going to win me over.

Swallowing, I finish eating, then sit there awkwardly. Danny, apparently Mark’s best friend, looks me over again. His tan skin reminds me of Mark, but it’s deeper, and the almond shape of his eyes are different too. Not to mention he’s a bear. Yet they act more like brothers than friends.

“How long have you two known each other?” I ask.

“A couple hundred years, give or take.” Danny sighs. “When was it, brah? The wild west? The tamer central America spread?”

Mark rolls his eyes. “We met when gunslingers in the west had less rules than CEOs.”

“And then I dragged his sorry ass around the country, or tried to,” Danny says. “But someone always manages to get hung up.”

The silence stretches between them as Mark pins Danny with a feral, threatening glare that I definitely don’t want to be on the other end of. After a second, Danny looks away and rubs a hand over the tablecloth I hadn’t noticed.

It’s beautiful, intricately made, and obviously done by hand. I rub my fingers over a bear that’s playing with cubs and smile. “This is beautiful.”

“My mother made it,” Mark says immediately. “It took her years. It was supposed to be a blanket when she finished, but ….”

“The best-laid plans lead to nowhere.” Danny finishes, a weight settling between them.

If I could not stick my foot in my mouth for ten minutes and lighten the mood, that would be great. The last thing I need is Mark associating me with a sad time. I exhale and shrug. “It’s beautiful all the same. I can’t believe how much time it must have taken. How much dedication.”

That earns me a soft smile. “She believed stories could change if spoken, but were less likely to lose their meaning if something of them was held down.”

“She’s right.” I nod.

“She often was.” Mark agrees.

A meow draws my attention to the side, and I notice the cat has taken a few more steps forward. Her tail flicks back and forth, nearly shaking her whole body as she watches me. Hell, maybe I imagined the meow.

“Luna, decide. In or out.”

The cat licks her back leg, and Mark sighs. “She can be petty.”

“Picky is better than trusting,” I reply simply.

“So, I’m going to go. I’m planning to scare some employees while dressed like a torn-up hunter. Last time I looked like a man from the 1920sso, this should get them talking.
