Ember was swamped by joy and concern and fear. Too many emotions, but so far joy was at the top of the list. She knew Zeke had been planning something, but she certainly hadnât expected this⦠Sheâd thought he was getting her a big present. Not a damn wedding!
She looked at the women before her, and their mates behind them. It was everyone she would have picked. It was obvious Willow was the maid of honor, and Shannon, Lora, Diegoâs wife Lily, Duncanâs wife Alex and Cat Harper were bridesmaids.
Ember looked at Shannon. âIâm flabbergasted.â
Shannon grinned. âThat was the point! We did question him about it, though.â
âLeave it to Zekeâ¦â she murmured.
âWell, not to interrupt your happy bubble, but we have some practical things to do, like get you in a dress.â
Ember nodded, and let herself be propelled toward the front door of the Black Orchid. She had a death grip on Zekeâs hand, and she nodded as the women chatted in front of her, though she couldnât have said what they were actually talking about. Then the crowd parted, and she got the first glimpse of her wedding venue.
âOhâ¦myâ¦gosh⦠Zeke,â she breathed.
It was like heâd walked into her mind and plucked out all the favorite pieces of her daydreams. Yes, she lived in one of the snowiest cities in the world, but she loved winter, and the look of everything covered in snow. Zeke had recreated that here, with crystals and fabric and subtle twinkle fairy lights. There was an arch of frosted trees at the front of the room, where they would exchange vows. It was a twilight dream, and she felt tears filling her eyes again.
âYou like it?â Zeke asked, and she could hear the uncertainty in his voice.
âI absolutely love it. I could not have done better. Seriously.â
Zeke grinned, his scarred face lightening. âI thought so, but I wanted to be sure.â
Ember walked down the aisle a little, and turned, looking up at the fabric and the giant chandelier hanging from the ceiling. âItâs amazing. And magical.â
For the first time she realized there was a woman crouched on the floor taking her picture. A photographer. Good, because she wanted to remember this forever.
Zeke stood behind her, watching her face for every emotion. She could see the anxiety in his expression, and she reached out to him. âYou did good, big man.â
He grinned at her, the skin of his face pulling taut. He looked different from when sheâd first met him, because heâd had two surgeries in that time. The scar across his forehead had always been the worst, and they were trying to smooth it out. Theyâd also released the one that pulled up on the edge of his lips, but she kind of liked that one. He was done for a while, though, heâd promised her. If she was content with the way he looked, that was all that mattered.
Ember allowed herself to be tugged away, down the hallway by the women. She caught his eye as she slipped into a room, and mouthed âI love youâ.
