They turn away quickly so “the more” won’t discourage you or hurt your feelings.

I reach for a bowl with lots of carrot-something batter stuck to the sides, then fill it with hot soapy water.

Cara hands me her extra-stiff scrubbing brush, and I put all my arm strength into getting the stuck-on layers off.

When I have one clean bowl, I empty the yucky water, dry the bowl, and place it back on Cara’s shelf. Then I reach for a greasy frying pan and do the same thing.

Because Cara is cooking as I’m washing, I never run out of pans: muffin tins, cake pans, soup pots. Even the first bowl with the stuck-on batter comes around again. This time, it’s filled with pieces of shredded carrot. I wonder how Cara manages to clean up after herself every single day.
