Chapter 13
Leilani hadnât been on a real first date since college. When she was in Africa and things with Anthony changed, there werenât many opportunities to go on a dateâthough now that she thought of it, he could have made an effort and organized something. Even just a picnic in the camp where they worked would have been nice. At least he would have shown he had put some thought into romancing her. Come to think of it, heâd never really shown he even possessed a romantic bone in the nearly three years theyâd been together.
Since Zach had agreed to meet her outside the mall, she didnât know where he wanted to take her. She only knew it would be outside town, to make sure they wouldnât run into someone they knewâor at least she hoped so. Sheâd insisted she wanted to keep things quiet for now, and that meant keeping her family in the dark too.
It took her nearly an hour to get ready. She wanted to look good for him, but she couldnât go overboard and look too sexy if she didnât want her aunt to suspect she wasnât going out with a colleague. She hadnât totally lied to herâshe told her she was meeting with a colleague outside town, and Zach was a colleague after all. Only, she may have let her aunt believe the colleague was a woman.
After the fifth outfit, she settled for a pair of tight-fitting black velvet trousers, black boots, and a white woolen sweater. Simple yet elegant. She fixed her makeup, pulled out the matching set of earrings and necklace her mother gave her when she graduated college, and sprayed her wrists and neck with perfume. As she stared at the final result in the mirror, she couldnât stop an excited smile from spreading on her face. She was thrilled at the thought of being alone with Zach, where they didnât have to pretend or hide their feelings.
âHave fun tonight,â her aunt said when Leilani popped her head into the living room to tell her she was going out. Shellyâs tone seemed a little too cheerful, making her wonder if sheâd already been busted. Good thing her parents werenât due to be home until the next morningâshe was sure her mother would have caught her.
She got in the car and drove to the mall, letting the GPS on her phone guide her there. Sheâd barely learned the route to get from her auntâs house to the hospital, and she didnât want to get lost on her way to her first date with Zach.
Her first date.
She giggled like a little girl, feeling giddy at the thought of hanging out with him, of being alone with him and getting to know him better. And she wouldnât mind sharing a few more kisses before they went back to their respective houses. Heat coursed through her at the thought of his lips on hers, and she nearly missed the turn.
âStop being such an idiot,â she chided herself, and returned her attention to the road.
