Brodie picks me up at four the next morning for our surprise… outing. Like a zombie, I go through the motions of waking, dressing, and readying when one’s up way before their usual time. Clad in my jean shorts, my new-to-me daisy tank, and one of Mick’s old denim jackets, I stumble around the house, double checking I have all my drone batteries. Mick carries my stuffed backpack in hand along with a lunchbox of snacks for the drive, however long that may be. He walks me out to the ute in his token flannel robe.

Brodie gets out and opens the passenger door for me. I see Mick smile at this. He hands Brodie my bag and snack pack, before grabbing me by both shoulders and looking me square in the face. Admittedly, I’m half asleep, but I do my best to give Mick my full attention.

“Have a rippa time, Sweetheart. Call if ya need anythin’,” he tells me sincerely, as his kind eyes shine into mine. He looks at Brodie who’s busy setting up my little area in the front seat. “I wouldna let ya go with anyone else, mind ya.”

He pulls me towards him and kisses me on the forehead. I wrap my arms around him, giving him a giant squeeze. He lets me go and I climb in. Like a gentleman, he closes the door tight behind me, resting his hand on the open window frame.

“Take care of my girl, Pryce, or I’ll pinch yar head off,” he orders, smiling from Brodie to me.

“Will do, mate,” Brodie assures him.

“Miss ya already, Old Man,” I mutter, grabbing Mick’s weathered hand, and squeeze it three times.

“I’ll be seein’ ya, Sweetheart,” he replies sweetly.

Brodie starts the engine and Mick walks back towards the house, waving from behind. We meander down the dirt driveway before pulling out onto the paved highway. Yawning like there’s no tomorrow, I nestle in my seat, and eye Brodie’s sweatshirt from the floor boards. I reach down and roll it into a pillow for my head. Finally finding the sweet spot, I relax and sigh. I hear him chuckle softy and he turns up the tunes to a nice, neutral volume. Paper Kites’ “On the Corner Where You Live” plays lightly through the speakers. Brodie doesn’t say anything at all, but lightly hums and drives as I blissfully drift off to sleep.
