Chapter 8

A YOUNG WOMAN WALKED into the cottage. She was wearing a paper bag over her head. Eye holes had been cut into the bag.

The woman lowered her head. “Please don’t look at me.”

Colin stood up. “Linda? Is that you under there?”

Linda raised a hand. “It is. Don’t come any closer. Colin, what’s happening to us? Why have we all changed?”

Steve stood up and took a step towards Linda. “We’re under a witch’s spell.” His hand flew up and covered his nose. He stepped backwards. “What is that smell?”

A sob escaped from Linda. “I’m sorry. It’s me. I smell of ... fresh lemons. And oranges. It’s disgusting. What are we going to do, Colin?”

Colin looked towards Myra and raised his white eyebrows in question.

Myra said, “The witch will try to trick you into going inside tall grey towers. She sometimes disguises them. Once you go inside you forget who you are.” She held up the troll book. “The words will disappear from this book and people will forget you ever existed. We have to stop you from going into any suspicious-looking buildings. Or caves. Or trees. Anything that looks out of the ordinary.”

Colin nodded. “Okay. We can do that.” He looked over at Linda and shuddered. “Sorry, Linda. You smell so fresh and clean.”

Linda turned her head away. “Please don’t say that.”

Steve put a hand on Myra’s shoulder. “I think this is the end for trolls. Once King Percival tells everyone how we were tricked, no one will want anything to do with us.”

“No. Don’t say that. Don’t let the witch win,” Myra told him. “We have to make our way back to my gran’s house, avoiding anything suspicious on the way. There’s a magic library in Gran’s house. All your problems will be solved once we get there.”

Colin gasped, “I can’t leave my house looking like this!”

A young man ran into the room, a paper bag over his head too. “Quick! Everyone! I’ve found somewhere we can go to hide. This way.” He abruptly left the cottage.

“Eric? Was that you?” Colin asked. “Where did he go?”

Linda stepped out of the cottage and turned her head in the direction that Eric had run off in. “Oh! There’s a big cave on the path. There’s a sign that says trolls are welcome. Everyone’s running into the cave. Come on!” She set off running.

Myra called out, “No! It’s a trap! Didn’t you hear what I said about the witch and her towers?” Myra looked over at Steve and Colin. “You heard me, didn’t you? Don’t go into that cave. It’s a trap.”

Colin pushed her gently to one side. “We have to go where the other trolls are going. We have to hide from the world.” He reached behind Myra and took something from a table. It was a large saucepan. He put it over his head and walked out of the door.

“Sorry, Myra. The time of trolls is over.” Steve reached for a smaller saucepan and popped it on his head. As he walked out of the cottage, he said, “Thanks for trying to help us anyway.
