* * * *

Hudson looked at his list and tried to think about another thing or two he could do with Tristan. He might want them to talk, but it didn’t mean they had to stick to Tristan’s house. The place was homey, but it was also a little sad, and it reminded Hudson a bit of a prison. And it kind of was, because that was what Tristan had made of it.

Besides, he didn’t only want to help Tristan—he also wanted them to be friends. Maybe even more than friends, if Tristan was ever ready for something like that. But it was way too soon to even think about that, so Hudson was making a list of friendly dates. So far he’d come up with enjoying a movie at the theater, getting coffee or ice cream, shifting and running in the woods, going out with Tristan’s friends.

“What are you doing?” Damien asked, looking over Hudson’s shoulder.

“Making a list.”

Damien chuckled. “I knew you were a list guy, but I didn’t realize you made a list for dates, too. You always look so sure of yourself and put together, I thought that kind of thing came naturally to you.”

“It’s not a list of dates.”

“Really? Why is there going to see a movie on it, then? That’s kind of the classic date, you know, or it is for us without as much money as you anyway.”

“It’s not a date. It’s just something to do with Tristan.”

Damien straightened and went to pour himself some coffee. He brought it to the table and sat in front of Hudson, raising one of his legs and hugging it as he stared. Hudson knew Damien wanted to say something and that he was trying to find the best way to say it without being offensive. They’d been friends long enough that Hudson recognized his current expression.

“What are you doing with him, Hudson?” he finally asked.

“I already told you. I want to help him. And before you start telling me how bad an idea it is, I talked to Kameron and Gentry.”

“And they’re both okay with you pretending to be a psychologist?”

“I’m not pretending to be anything. I’m just trying to be a friend.”

“He already has friends, friends who know him better than you do.”

Hudson put his pen down. “But none of them lost their mate.”

Damien blinked. “Is that what happened to him? He lost his mate?”

Shit. Hudson had forgotten that tidbit of info wasn’t common knowledge. “You can’t tell anyone.”

“I won’t. I promise. That’s why he’s been so withdrawn? When did it happen?”

“I can’t tell you, Damien. Tristan kept it a secret for a reason. But yes, that’s one of the reasons he’s so withdrawn. He stopped living when he lost his mate, and I want to help him change that. I know exactly what he’s going through and how he feels. I went through the same thing.”

“Okay, I get that. You’re trying to help him, and I understand how you might be one of the few people here who can.
