Chapter 73

Limited Edition Fossil Gangster

In the twenty years that Ergou has known Li Yang, he’s never seen her look lovelier than she did that day. A woman is most beautiful when she’s in love, especially at her wedding. On that day, nothing existed in Li Yang’s world but Zhang Yue. She once said that marrying him was her greatest dream. Now that she was almost there, how could she not be happy?

Beaming with joy, the couple walked into the hotel to the raucous accompaniment of firecrackers.

“ . . . And will you remain faithful, whether in wealth or in poverty . . . ” said the master of ceremonies, who’d been invited down from the provincial capital.

“I will.”

“I will.”

“We will, too!” put in Xiaoji.

People are different in the underworld. When they get together, they can’t resist a catcall. Li Yang just smiled in her usual daze at Zhang Yue.

In that city, people usually only hung around for at most an hour after a wedding, running off as soon as they finished eating. But Zhang Yue’s wedding was different. Most of the attendees were gangsters. Once they sat down together, the shouting, drinking games, and general boisterousness went on indefinitely.

Zhang Yue followed the usual process of going with Li Yang to toast each table of guests. When they reached the second table, where her classmates were seated, Zhang Yue spotted the brooding face of Yan Chunqiu. Apparently Yan hadn’t wanted to sit at that table, because Gao Huan was there. She may not have married Zhao Hongbing, but she’d never forgotten how Yan had hit him on the back of the head. She refused to speak a word to him. Every time he looked at Gao Huan, Yan Chunqiu felt uncommonly dejected.

“Who invited you?” Zhang Yue demanded, staring past his raised wine glass at Yan.

“No one, but Li Yang’s my classmate.” Already in a bad mood, Yan Chunqiu was even more put out by Zhang Yue’s question. However, he kept his cool.

“Throw him out!” Zhang Yue told Little Beijing, full of rage.

“Hey . . . ” Li Yang pulled at Zhang Yue’s arm.

Zhang Yue gave Yan Chunqiu another look and went straight to the next table without drinking his toast. If he was going to listen to anyone, it was his new wife; when he was really riled, even Zhao Hongbing couldn’t stop him.

Not even fifteen minutes into the banquet, and some people were already drunk. The drunkest of all of them was Doorgod Jiang. He was seated at the same table as Dong Bo and his guys. As one of Zhang Yue’s closest companions, Doorgod was responsible for sitting with guests and having a drink with them. Northerners have the bad habit of equating drinking with friendship, so Doorgod Jiang was bound to drink too much that day.

As soon as the banquet began, Dong Bo and his guys pulled out three extra-large glasses to demonstrate their capacity. “Let’s drink to Zhang Yue’s marriage!” Doorgod proposed, and everyone took a big gulp of liquor.
