THANKFULLY, WE WERE allowed to stay home from school. Once our mother left for work, Nathan grabbed his keys and we headed into town. Our first stop was the marina.

“Hey, Sonny,” Nathan said as we strolled into his office.

He looked up from his desk frowned. “Aren’t you supposed to be in school?”

Nathan nodded. “We are, but…” his voice grew thick with emotion, “we lost one of our friends last night.”

Sonny’s face turned grim. “I imagine you’re talking about Susan. I saw that on the news this morning. I still can’t believe it myself, that poor girl.”

“We’re still in shock, too.” His eye filled with tears and he looked away. “

Flooded with emotions myself, I stood there quietly, trying to keep myself together. Focusing on my anger seemed to help to a point. I wanted to tell Sonny what was really happening. To warn him about the vampires. But, I knew he’d think I was nuts.

Sonny let out a sigh and broke the silence. “You’d better not go out alone at night, Nikki. Not until they catch who’s doing this.”

“I know. I won’t,” I replied softly.

“I sure hope the sheriff catches the asshole who’s doing this. Things are out of control. I dread turning on the news every morning,” Sonny said, shaking his head in disgust.

“Yeah. It’s scary,” Nathan said. “I’m sure he’s gotta be worried about Celeste, too.”

I rolled my eyes inwardly.

“She’s a pretty girl. I’m sure he is,” Sonny replied.

“So, did Duncan make it home?” I asked, wanting to change the subject. Just hearing her name made me want to punch something. I was still pissed off about her biting Nathan and was planning on confronting Caleb about it. I had a feeling he wouldn’t be too pleased.

“He actually got back in early this morning. He’s probably still sleeping.”

I wondered if he’d been with Celeste the entire time. Even after my night with Ethan, I still felt a stab of jealousy.

“Do you think he’d mind if we stopped over? Nathan asked.

He shrugged. “Go for it. The house should be open. Tell him to get his ass to work, I need him here.”

“Will do. Come on, Nikki.”

I said goodbye to Sonny and we headed toward his house, which was right next to the marina. When we arrived, we rang the doorbell, but nobody answered.

“Let’s go inside.” Nathan pushed the door open and we walked in.

“Do you know where his bedroom is?” I asked, as we stepped into the living room.

He gave a sly smile. “No. I figured you’d have known by now.”

“Very funny.”

He laughed. “Why don’t I check upstairs and you look on the main floor?”

“Okay.”

I made my way through the house, which looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for a while. There were empty soda cans and beer bottles sitting out, the dishes were piling up, and the floors needed to be cleaned. The marina was kept pretty clean, so it surprised me. Then, again, that’s where the guys spend most of their time.

I moved past the kitchen and noticed there were a couple of rooms down the hallway.
