Reeve and Charlotte worked their way through the section on dark magic for the next few hours. It was a slower progress than expected because Reeve kept getting distracted by Charlotte's perfume and the way she bit her full bottom lip when she was thinking. On the other hand, she kept getting distracted by exciting books and spells, gasping and appalled one minute or thoroughly engrossed the next.

"This might be something," Charlotte said from the table opposite him. She tapped to the page of a yellowing old tome that Reeve was sure was bound in human skin.

"What is it?"

"An account of a sorcerer in the thirteenth century. He tried to use his servant as a vessel for the fallen angel, Azazel. The possession worked right up until the point that the servant exploded," Charlotte said, sounding way too fascinated.

Reeve rubbed his eyes. "Okay, and why is that something?"

"Because it means that a more powerful being can't just be shoved into a normal human because our physical bodies can't contain it."

Reeve's stomach twisted. "So if Aneirin tries to shove a goddess's shade into a human body, it will explode. They want you for that body. You would be the one exploding."

Charlotte's foot found him under the table, and she ran it along his calf. "Calm down, Reeve. I have no intention of exploding. Aneirin would have to perform some other magic on me, or any other human, to contain Morrigan. They would be better off trying it with a fae or a shifter because their bodies are already immortal. They want mine out of revenge."

"And also so they can use your magic," Reeve added darkly.

"The revenge side will make them have to work harder, and if he's furious enough, then he's bound to make mistakes. Look at the attack on the club and leaving that acolyte behind. It's sloppy."

"Or he's leaving breadcrumbs in the hope we walk right into his goddamn trap." Reeve was never going to sleep well again until Aneirin was buried. "I swear to all the gods, I'm going to get gray hairs over this shit."

Charlotte smiled above the book. "Is that meant to be a bad thing? I think you would look rather good with a bit of gray."

Her foot was still against his calf, so Reeve trapped it between his legs. "Is that so? I'm only twenty-seven, but I'm sure dating you will add some gray hairs before long."

"Dating me? Is that what we are doing?" She looked back at the writing on the page, but she wasn't reading it. Reeve slid his hand under the table, pulled off her ankle boot, and stroked her foot. He had to touch her before he went crazy.

"I don't really care what we call it. As long as it's with you, I'm in," he said and hung onto her slender ankle so she couldn't pull away from him. His thumb brushed over the warm, bare skin above her sock, and she bit her lip.

"I don't work like that, Reeve. I need to know in black and white terms what's happening.
