Chapter Eleven

Late the next afternoon, Dean was nearly falling over on the counter of my diner.

I shook my head while I went to pour him his third cup of coffee. In spite of the squad finally calling it quits at around 3 AM, I doubted that Dean had gotten so much as a second of sleep. I didn’t need much rest anymore—one of the few things about my condition I was grateful for—but I remembered the struggle to stay awake all too well. So, when I nudged him awake, I made sure I did it gentle.

“Eh, what?” he grunted, shaking his head a little.

“Extra bean juice,” I told him, nudging the filled cup forward. “On the house.”

He swigged it down like it was Dorcas’ moonshine. “You’d think after all that coffee Alton made for us last night, I’d be a little more awake.”

I smirked. “Alton’s cup of Joe’s got kick, but it can’t keep you going forever. Right about now, I’d say you’re hitting the wall on how far it can carry you.”

He cleared his throat and gave his head a harder shake. “Well... here’s to this stuff carrying me a little further up the road.” His cheeks puffed out as he leaned back. “On a related note, good thing I had Mason do the driving today. Hope he gets back here soon.”

I glanced down at the counter and looked at the scrawled list in front of him. “Still no closer to figuring out what keeps grabbing our kids?”

“Still too damn many suspects,” Dean grumbled, his face turning sour while he straightened himself out. “Maybe if I had a better idea what we’re up against, I could have got the schools to close up.”

I looked up at him then. “Wait, you tried doing that?”

“First thing this morning, right after I left your place.”

I put down the coffee pot and put my hands on my hips. “You mean to tell me that you didn’t even bother going home?”

“When I could maybe do something to keep this situation from getting worse?” Dean argued back. “Hell no, I didn’t.” He gritted his teeth. “Not that me going by Thurgood or Damnation Central did me any good...”

“You mean after what happened yesterday, they’re still not listening to you?” I asked in disgust.

He shook his head. “As far as Houck’s concerned... well, I always knew it’d be a long shot on getting him to budge. But you’d think an owl woman like Peterson would be a little wiser when it came to student safety at Damnation Central.”

“Well, could you at least get them to cancel the football games?” I asked in exasperation.

“The next thing I tried arguing,” Dean said. “But they didn’t want to hear that either.” He suddenly struck the counter with a fist that rattled everything on it. “Damn them and their petty politics.”

“S-Sheriff?” a timid voice said from behind me. I looked over my shoulder to see Hannah using my body as a shield.

Dean’s face softened at the sight of the fox waitress.
