Chapter Sixteen

An escalating dispute at work over parking spaces ate up most of my morning. I appeased both parties and got back to my office before Mrs. Craigie found out and tattled to Mein Fuhrer.

I checked my calendar to make sure everything was done, when I remembered Eddie’s invitation. I’d forgotten to mention it to Heather. After a day filled with spiteful sniping, I deserved an evening of fun.

I phoned her at work. “Are you busy?”

“I’ve got a few minutes. Why?”

“Eddie mentioned a pub called In a Pig’s Eye,” I said.

“Oh yeah. That place is a lot of fun.”

“Good. Do you want to go there tonight, listen to the band, and have dinner?”

“Outstanding suggestion. What time?”

“6:00 PM?”

“You got it, girl. I’ll be ready.”

The promise of music and drinks with friends brightened my spirits. A popular neighborhood pub was another benefit of living here. I checked it off in the air with my finger and mentally added a few more—walking distance to Pickering Wharf, a private yard, and a friend across the hall.

My choice of clothes reflected my mood. I’d chosen a bright striped blouse, white fitted jeans, and gold hoops for my ears. I was ready to enjoy myself. When I popped over to Heather’s, her outfit proclaimed she had the same idea—tight red jeans, a black clingy top, and large red feather earrings.

Heather waved me into the kitchen. “Come in for a minute and sit down. I’ve got something to tell you.”

Jojo came over to welcome me, and I picked him to cuddle him.

“I’ve been dying to tell you the good news.” Words spilled out of her mouth in an excited rush. “I’ve been with Peter three times since the dance, and he invited me to his cottage on Cape Cod for the weekend. It’s right on the beach. Just a sec.” She shoved her chair back and jumped up, startling JoJo into a series of barks. On her way to the bedroom, she threw words over her shoulder. “I made an emergency trip to the mall. Thank God for Victoria’s Secret.”

With a look of triumph on her face, she exhibited her prize, a black gossamer triangle and a tiny stringy thing. My mouth fell open. I blinked to wipe away the image her lingerie conveyed. “Oh my God!”

“I intend to knock his socks off.”

I covered my mouth and giggled. “It’ll knock more than his socks off.”

She grinned and raised an eyebrow. “That’s the idea.” She sat down, elbow on the table and chin in her hand. “So, how was your week?”

I frowned. “To begin with, I’ve seen too much of Fischer. He appears at the complex at weird times for no reason. The other day I spotted his car in the lot, but no sign of him. He has me second-guessing every move I make. It’s like he declared open season on my life. Then there’s Tom.”

When I told her about the phone call on my unlisted number, she drummed her fingernail against the wooden surface as she gave me her opinion of Tom and my willingness to talk to him.
