1. There Is an Acceptable Standard of Right

Just as the cube is not solved until each of the six sides has a solid color on it, there is an accepted standard of what is right in the business world. There are rules and expectations that form the standards of right. When searching for business books on ethics, you find few titles and very few pages among the best sellers on this subject. Rules and expectations don’t end with Little League.

One cannot ignore the obvious absolute moral right. Regardless of your background or spiritual heritage, every person possesses an inherent sense of right and wrong. For example, no one would think it’s acceptable for a boss to physically beat his employees. However, you might easily overlook someone reading a magazine at his workstation on company time. Obvious areas of right and wrong are easy to see in others and seem more obscure in our own lives. However, obscurity does not change the ethical principles.

When you do things correctly, it creates order. When you do them wrong, it creates chaos. Policies change, but principles of right never do. The leader is the solution to the mixed-up cube bringing order to the organization. When leaders enter the equation, they should bring a sense of right through their example for others to follow. No matter how mixed up the cube may become, the ultimate goal is to realign the colors to match on all six sides, and you as the leader must be the ethical catalyst.

People often believe you lose creativity and individuality when you have order and compliance. If this occurs, then you have confused ethics with ego and you are trying to make everyone like you rather than giving them guiding values. Order and compliance in ethical matters allow the whole group to be stronger in all areas, including creativity and distinctiveness. Ethics prevent one person from corrupting the office environment with her lack of scruples.
