Chapter 8

Diane slammed the door of her SUV. There were several other black cars lining the farm house setting. The gray paint on the cedar planks of the house looked fresh as did the white picket fence. It was picturesque, until a loud shot sent birds squawking in all directions.

Ren exited the house as she approached. “Hey.”

She pointed to the porch. “Do we access the gun range this way?”

Ren nodded. “We can go through the house, but most of us are using the side entrance.”

Diane put her hands in her jacket pockets. “How’s the training coming?”

“Good. I was waiting for you. We will go up next.”

“I’m not sure why we need recertification to shoot a bullet.”

Ren sneered. “Fucking Demons. The bullet wouldn’t work in a regular rifle. Just found out today. The new rifles are a smaller version of the DK10 design.”

Diane stopped. “How big are those bullets?”

“They are a little longer than standard bullets, but the liquid inside them throws the trajectory off. There’s a rumor that R and D is working on a handgun version.”

“That doesn’t surprise me.” They turned as Jenner pulled up to the house.

Ren shook his head. “I’m not sure how he can stomach them despite his sister’s poor taste in men.”

Diane’s hands clenched inside her pockets. “Laura is an amazing person. I miss working with her.”

“I got nothing against Laura. I wish she was still with us.”

“Laura does anything Jenner asks of her.”

Ren met her eyes. There was a thoughtfulness, as if he had missed something. “Good to know. Have you seen this bullet in action?”

Diane cleared her throat. “No one here has.”

“I heard some rumors.”

She glanced toward Jenner as he exited his vehicle. “Oh? What did you hear?”

“That these bullets can put any shifter down. It hasn’t been tested on a warrior yet. Do you think Jenner could get Tovan to be our guinea pig?”

Diane stood still, allowing the anger to pass. She kept her eyes averted, watching Jenner approach them. “I doubt the warriors will be happy about this weapon, even if they designed it to shut down the Ladon’s ability to impersonate us.”

Ren huffed. “Is that what you believe?”

Diane met Ren’s gaze. “Yes. The Were’s can shift into an animal, but it isn’t animals infiltrating the PIA or our government.”

Ren nodded. “That’s true.”

Jenner paused at the end of the porch. “You guys heading over?”

Ren smiled. “You bet. We are right behind you.”

Jenner proceeded to the rear of the farmhouse as Ren and Diane trailed behind.

Ren touched her back. “Do you still like to climb?”

She hadn’t been climbing in years. The thought brought back memories of them laughing and training with Derek and her father. “I do, but I haven’t had the time. Is there a course set up here?”

“No, but there are natural rock formations on the edge of the property. Greg showed them to me yesterday when we were getting things set up.”

Diane raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t realize you and Greg were that close.”

Ren shrugged. “His father is my boss.
