CHAPTER 16

Theo

France

Many things seem to have changed since Theo had recovered from his attack by the Order.

Camille, finally, had found the strength to heal from the trauma she had experienced. That was probably an overestimation on his behalf. She would never recover fully until Louis was safely returned. It had been a start, and that was all that mattered.

He still couldn’t shake the feeling that someone so broken could so quickly right herself but then return down the slippery slope that life had created for her. Theo wasn’t sure why destiny had put her into his path, had brought him here to the Dumonts, but he always believed everything happened for a reason.

Never would he say aloud that Louis being taken was part of destiny’s grand design, but he was sure that it was. Everything had a much broader purpose in the grand scheme of things, and they just needed to continue to figure out what all of this was.

It had all become painfully clear after Philippe had called home to advise them of what they discovered.

Josephine never left France.

It was strange to see everyone breathe a sigh of relief but also be more confused and scared than before. The Fourniers had been called in and dragged over the coals by Delane, the shouting echoing throughout the giant chateau. If she had never left France to begin with, they should have found her, but they hadn’t.

It was quickly deduced that Josephine was being sheltered by the network of the Order. The same people who attacked Theo, the one he had been so unprepared for, and if it wasn’t for Delane, he probably wouldn’t still be here.

Theo felt embarrassed that he had let it happen. He had never been one to go into a situation unprepared, even if he wasn’t sure exactly what he was up against. The Order of Samael was something entirely new. It wasn’t like fighting another witch. They possessed something that completely incapacitated him, so he swore blind he wouldn’t let it happen again.

That was why he had combed through book after book, old grimoires, and anything else he could get his hands on before seeing a spell he hoped would work against them. He immediately contacted his sister and told her about it. The other groups may need it too, but he hadn’t managed to get in touch with Henri.

None of them would truly know how to perfect it. The Dumonts hadn’t learnt the ways of a normal witch. Instead, they were just rich, entitled supernatural beings who didn’t see the purpose in ritual or spell craft like everyone else had to rely on.

The second that Camille realised Josephine and Louis were still in the country she immediately jumped into action. There was no stopping her, and she demanded that she go on the search herself. Delane tried to get her to stay behind, to rest more, worried about her mental state but she would hear none of it.

The first place to start would be the house that he was attacked in, and she wanted to go there.
