HABAKKUK’S SECOND COMPLAINT

Having been displeased by God’s reply to Habakkuk’s first complaint, his complaint was followed by another: “Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong. Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?” (Hab. 1:13). Habakkuk could not conceive of the Most Holy God using wicked men to punish Judah. Granted that Judah has been in disobedience, but surely the Babylonians were much, much worse! “O Rock, you have ordained them [the Babylonians] to punish” (v. 12). It is possible that God’s answer went against Habakkuk’s theology, for Habakkuk could not see how a most holy God could use evil people to punish His beloved people. Habakkuk was not only a prophet but also an eloquent poet; in verses 14 to 17 he poetically pleads with God not to continue with this strategy. Habakkuk movingly urges God to see it his way. The poetry summed up means: This cannot be right! You surely cannot do such a thing!
