CHAPTER ELEVEN

An hour later, Arian picked himself up off the floor with a groan and a grimace. “Okay. I think it’s safe to say you’ve got that one down cold.”

“Sorry. I didn’t know that was going to happen.” I handed him a bottle of water, wincing at the bruises already beginning to blossom over his arms and shoulders. “What was different that time?”

“You put more power in your voice.”

“How?”

“I meant physically.” He took a long sip from the bottle and sighed. “You spoke from your diaphragm—it lowered the tonal quality of your voice, causing the waves to resonate more strongly in the air.” He glanced at me and grinned. “And before you ask, no, the answers aren’t always so simple but this is a fairly simple spell.”

“So you say but I still haven’t managed to render you unconscious.” I crossed my arms, not quite able to keep from pouting. “And I was actually trying.”

“First rule of spell casting—know what you’re casting.” He nodded at the book. “I told you this would knock someone on their ass, not knock them out. This is pretty much the magical equivalent of shoving the bully to the ground to give you time to run like hell.”

“Oh.” I started to frown only to immediately perk up. “In that case, I’d say I’m doing excellent.”

“Yeah, you’ve got that one down pat.” His laugh trailed off in to a groan when he rolled his shoulders. “Good enough I’m calling it for the day. I should be better by tomorrow.”

“Do I need to point out we have a doctor on the premises now?” I closed the book, picking it up and handing it to him with all the care I’d show a live bomb—maybe more. Just because he’d convinced me I needed to learn how to defend myself with this stuff didn’t mean I was comfortable touching it. “One who specializes in demons and half demons.”

“Take this in the spirit it’s meant but I’d rather have you perform a craniotomy on me than go to Reece.” Apparently picking up on my discomfort, he took the book from me, tucking it under his arm as if it was an ordinary tome. “It’s cool. I’m somewhere between halfway and three quarters of the way to being a doctor. I know how to handle a few bruises and bumps.”

“Is there something you know about Reece that you’re not telling me?” When he didn’t answer right away, I sighed. “Arian.”

“No, I don’t know anything.” He shrugged. “But I don’t not know anything. Yeah, he delivers babies and helps out kids where and when he can but he also stitches flayed people back together so they can endure another round of torture.” He glanced over at me, pursing his lips before continuing. “You can’t trust someone like that.”

“You’re better with Sarai than any of us and yet you’re very informed about all sorts of not nice magic.” I pushed open the door and started down the hall, our footsteps echoing off the stone walls as he fell in beside me.
