Who Am I to Serve?

Deep dreams are not about getting away to an isolated island in the balmy South Seas. Nor are our deepest dreams to climb Mount Everest or make a million dollars. If our deepest dreams aren’t about other people, then we have settled for mere power and accomplishment—the self-absorption of narcissism. Our deepest and truest dreams must bring good to someone who is without justice, reconciliation, or hope. The population that we are written to serve may include many different kinds of people, but it is probably focused on a few. It is likely centered on a distinct group of people that may be bound by a particular race, nationality, region, or need. We must always be willing to go further than our own group and pursue the passions that take us into other groups of people—dirt-bike racers, church choirs, abused women, and so forth. We must dream dreams that are connected to a specific population.
