CHAPTER 8
THE SOUTHERN WAY
The party is on and everybody shows the crew a nice time. Several fights break out but the crew aren’t involved in any of them. After the party, they go back to their motel rooms for private time.
It’s very late when Ebony gets to Ajay’s room. She isn’t planning to go back to big mama’s house. Poppa and big mama was thinking ahead when they put her on birth control pills, the day after her father left for Arizona. Neither of her parents know about it yet. Poppa and big mama are not condoning her or Tank being sexually active. But they know about the motel incident, Jb and Lynn’s incident and they also know about Ajay’s serious affection for Ebony. Even Ebony was surprised when they took her to the clinic. Poppa had talked to papa about it and they decided to put her on the pill. They wasn’t willing to wait for Pearl or John to approve it. Ajay knows she’s on the pill and he wants to know all the details behind them taking her to get them and why they did.
“I guess they realize that I’m growing up,” Ebony tells him, “Even if mama and daddy don’t want too.”
“Uh huh. I can see that you’re growing up. Just by how fine you’re getting,” he says.
He’s smiling and staring at her, as she lays across his king-sized bed. He asks, “But do you need pills in H-town?”
“Yes. For whenever you come to visit and they need to be in my system for when I come home in December,” she says, “Big mama and poppa know about the motel, Anthony. They talked on the phone with papa and granny. Then they took me to the clinic. I’ve been taking them since July. I have enough to last until I’m eighteen too and they’re in my system.”
“I know they knew about the motel,” he says, “And I got something for your system too, alright?” he adds, smiling at her.
She blushes openly as he lays down next to her. He ask how she’s spent her days and nights without him. She tells him every detail.
“I’ve thought about that night at granny’s, every night and every day since I’ve been here,” she says, “That was a great time. I loved it.” But he wants to talk more about Raymond. He doesn’t trust him, at all.
“Why was you so tense when I hugged you, earlier? What was that about? Raymond?”
She tells him today was her 1st time seeing him, when he came home with Tank. She tells him how he stared at her and how uncomfortable that made her feel. He tells her he had noticed it too and he didn’t like it either. He doesn’t trust Raymond or any type like him. He’s more concerned than he lets on. But he thinks Raymond will bother Ebony more, now that he’s put him on front street.
“That’s why I took it to him at big mama’s house,” he says, “I wanted to shank that nigga.
