CHAPTER 21
ARRIK
For the first time in a long, long time Arrik was nervous.
Not because of the execution that was due to happen the following day, though that on its own was just a cause to be nervous. Heâd been to many over the years, but this one would be hard for his wife, and in turn hard on him. He wasnât even anxious for the tour of the kingdom which Wren was due to embark on in two days. Even now, he hated the idea of being apart from her.
He paced outside their rooms, feeling his guardsâ gazes on him. It was unbecoming for a king to pace like a caged animal, but Arrik couldnât help it.
He was sneaking his wife out for a romantic dinner, just the two of them.
It was the first time in their relationship that he felt like he could. Things had changed between them the other day for the better. In fact, it seemed like each day got better.
Arrik knew after her kidnapping and the last council meeting that he had to do something for his little dragon. Something to ease the tension in her shoulders and show her that married life and ruling would not always be heartbreak and stress and trouble. He wanted to show his fiery wife that he cared about her and her needs, make her feel listened to and seen.
He huffed out a breath and clasped his hands behind his back, his shoulder pulling slightly. To that end heâd spent a large part of the day conducting a very dangerous game of Lure the Giant Dragon to a Secret Cove. He had to hope, after all the fatalities heâd only just avoided, that Wren would accept his surprise evening plans.
The door opened to their chambers and he was rendered speechless. While she was dressed plainly by Verlantian court standards, Wren took his breath away with just a pair of thigh-high boots, trousers, and a simple linen shirt that showed her curvy figure that he longed to run his hands and lips along. In fact, heâd take much pleasure in removing each piece of clothing from herâ¦
âAnd where, exactly, are you taking me?â Wren asked, cutting through his wicked thoughts. She closed the door behind her and gestured to her outfit. âThis isnât typical attire for the evenings with your court, my king.â
He liked it when she called him that. My king. Like she owned him.
âJust trust me. Youâll like it,â Arrik replied, once he figured out how to use his tongue once again.
âTrust you?â she said, a teasing glint in her eye.
âYes, trust me,â Arrik laughed, feeling the knot in his chest somehow both tighten in anticipation and relax in joy at being able to laugh like this with Wren. It was a rare thing where he felt free enough to be honest about his emotions.
âVery well,â she murmured, trying to make him out. âWhat do you have planned?â
âA surprise.â He held his hand out. âCome with me?â
She didnât hesitate. Wren slipped her hand into his and it felt like winning a war.
