My seat was changed first thing on Monday and I started speech therapy. No rest for the wicked. Thereafter, speech therapy was Monday afternoons for four weeks or so, always during music, which drove me crazy. I made diphthongs and consonant clusters and moo-ing noises with the speech therapist while my classmates got to bang wood blocks and sing. To make matters worse, the speech therapist was Miss Shand. I don’t know why I hadn’t seen it coming. What nice shoes, Miss Shand, she said at the end of one session, What a lovely hat. Honestly, it’s like training a monkey. We both coped with our frustrations as best we could. After the month, it was finished. The stammer was exactly the same but I now understood clearly that I had no social graces and would not be getting lunch invitations or Christmas cards from the Shand household, not now, not ever. I was not her type. The day it finished, Miss Shand informed me she did not expect me to buy her a gift: the speech therapy was provided free. I said, Thank you Miss Shand, so something rubbed off. I’d paid my debt to society and was free to go.
