Imperfect Speakers

Matthew Manning was parking his Jensen-Healey sports car next to Vic Nottingham’s modest van as 1 arrived on foot from the local station. He had promised to come over and see the Harpers at my request, and we had agreed on 5 pm on 17 December, 1977. He was right on time. 1 had asked him to come for two reasons: 1 thought it would be interesting for him to have a look at somebody else’s poltergeist, and 1 wanted Mrs. Harper to see that poltergeist victims, of whom Matthew was the most celebrated in the country thanks to his books and TV appearances, could survive the ordeal and grow up into perfectly sane and normal people. Moreover, they could actually benefit from the experience by taking a serious interest in psychic phenomena, as he had.

Maurice Grosse had already spent the afternoon with the Harpers, and the Voice, which was now growling away at all times without seeming to worry any longer about doors being closed. It had started performing outside the house as well, while Janet was buying vegetables at the old lady’s shop up the road.

‘She looked at me and said “what the flippin’ hell’s that?” Janet recalled, ‘and I said “only my ghost. 1 brought it with me.” She went off her head’

And strange sounds were heard when Mrs. Harper took Janet and Jimmy to the doctor. ‘That’s Jimmy making his train noises,’ Mrs. Harper explained. The Voice had also been heard on a bus, while a surprised shopper in an Enfield supermarket had been told to ‘shit off, you old sod.’ It was becoming somewhat embarrassing.

On being told that Matthew was coming along at teatime, it promised:

‘I’LL PUT ON A SHOW FOR HIM.’ And for once, it kept its word. As soon as we arrived, however, the Voice was silent. I made the introductions, and was relieved to see that the girls were on their best behaviour. Matthew’s calm and friendly approach put everybody at ease, and soon he and Mrs. Harper were comparing experiences like a pair of war veterans. (‘Did you have this?’ ‘Oh yes, and did that ever happen…’).

I asked Matthew if he had ever felt headaches like those Mrs. Harper felt just when something was about to happen.

I got a prickling sensation down the back of the neck,’ he replied. ‘That was …

‘Excuse me!’ Grosse interrupted excitedly. ‘Janet said that half an hour before you came.’ He ran back his tape, and we heard her say:

‘I keep getting a pain in the back of my head.’ She had indicated the back of the neck, just where Matthew had felt his strange sensation. ‘It’s like — echoes.’ She had volunteered this information quite spontaneously, and I commented how remarkable it was that if all poltergeist cases were childish tricks, all children all over the world always thought up the same tricks.

Matthew had strong views on people who accused him of trickery, such as the magician James Randi. ‘He’s saying what I’ve done was done right from the beginning as a gigantic hoax to fool the world,’ he said.
