And yet despite this generic name, oceanic histories do not only demand dealing necessarily with an ocean but also with smaller bodies of water, such as the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Black, or Chinese seas, and smaller still, such as the Great Lakes in North America or Central Africa. Oceanic histories are not so much fixed to a particular space as they are a style of inquiry (Table 5.2).

Oceanic histories move beyond the boundaries of any single empire or future nation-states, emphasizing interregional contacts, flows, and networks reminiscent of transnational history. Nevertheless, transnational history reaches throughout the globe in the age of nation-states, while oceanic histories cover much longer time periods within ocean basins. Both branches, however, are approaching the stage of global history: transnational history due to its global reach; oceanic histories tackling big slices of the globe. The innovations provided by these two as well as the renewal of international history following the “culturalist turn” and more generally the flourishing of the extended relational family at large—presented in the last two chapters—all stem from the processes of globalization. The history of globalization and its pivotal place in defining world and global histories as the providers of the largest frames for contextualization, together with big history, waits ahead. Now it is time to turn to the singular contribution coming from the social sciences: the third big C that stands for conceptualization.
