Summary
The fractionation of PMMA according to tacticity not only reiterates the influence of carrier liquid viscosity on retention behaviour, but this example also shows the influence that the thermodynamic quality of the carrier liquid can have on retention behaviour. By replacing the good low viscosity carrier liquid with a theta solvent of similar viscosity it was demonstrated that both the resolution of the peaks and the fractionation selectivity could be increased significantly. In addition, ThFFF also allows for the determination of important parameters such as DT which can be used to evaluate the relative backbone flexibility of a polymer.
