It turned out that vampire bats that morphed into men did not burn up in the sun, they discovered with relief. Well, at least that was one less thing they had to worry about.

“I need a shower,” Kaley complained as she pulled into the parking lot of a local diner. The place was called Andrew’s, and according to the app on her phone, this place served the best vegan blueberry pancakes. Well, she’d be the judge of that. “Come on, I’m starved,” she told Caye. “We can find somewhere to rest after I get some food in me.”

Caye let out a groan. “It’s too early,” he mumbled. Though he wasn’t going to burn, he used Kaley’s jacket as a shield to block the sun from glaring in his eyes while he attempted to sleep. Kaley reached over and grabbed her jacket. “Hey!” he said.

“I promise I’ll let you rest after I eat, but it’s been a couple of days since we’ve really talked, and we should catch up.”

“Okay,” he said, moving out of the car.

“See, that wasn’t so hard. Come on,” she said, grabbing his hand as she moved to go inside. Kaley had really missed this. Everything felt simple between them again. She knew she still had the issue of him being a vampire, but for now she was choosing to ignore that fact. Right now, she just wanted to be a normal couple out doing normal things.

The diner had just opened, so it was almost completely empty when they arrived. They had a seat, and not long after, a waitress arrived to take their orders. Naturally, Caye wasn’t interested in anything on the menu, so it was only Kaley who ordered. After several minutes, the waitress returned with her plate of pancakes, hash browns, and a glass of orange juice.

“So, does normal food digest well for you? I was just thinking back to how we used to share plates, before I, um, found out about your preferred diet.”

“My body doesn’t react negatively to it, but it doesn’t do anything for me either,” Caye said between a yawn. “I can eat it no problem, but it doesn’t take my hunger away.”

“So, in other words, offering you my kind of diet wouldn’t do anything to curb your appetite.”

“No, it doesn’t. Look, Kaley, if I could be what you want me to be, I would, but I’m not human, at least not fully. So, unless your book can change things, I’ll always be this way, and you’ll just have to accept it.” Kaley pouted as she pushed her food around the plate. Suddenly, she wasn’t as hungry. “I know it’s not what you wanted to hear, but it’s where we’re at. If we want this to work, we’re just going to have to accept each other.”

“It’s just that… it’s still a lot to take in.”

“I know. But this is an adjustment for the both of us. Everything is just as new to me as it is to you. Do you honestly think this is easy for me, Kaley? I changed species in an instant.
