Chapter Twelve

Drex exited the back door of his house just as a large brykol shot up out of the water and grabbed Shaylin. Quil and Nash weren’t fast enough to stop the creature from disappearing with her. Nash screamed her name, then dove into the river.

By that time, Drex was halfway to the dock and shifting into his dragon. Once airborne, he flew over the water, spotting the brykol disappearing into the dark depths of the river.

Drex dove into the water and swam in the direction he thought the creature had gone. But it was like the bastard vanished.

Breaking through the surface of the water, Drex roared and crawled up the river bank. He shifted to human and willed clothes to cover himself. Fury and panic rushed in his veins. She was gone. His mate was snatched from him and the other two males were in the water searching for her.

Nash emerged from the water and pulled himself up onto the dock. He let out a scream of fury. “Where the fuck is she?”

Quil popped his head out of the water and met Drex’s stare before diving back under.

His chest tightened and his dragon was pacing within. She had to be okay and come back to them. “Nash, what do you know about the brykol?”

Nash pressed the heels of his palms into his eyes. “They guard the Graxecon island. Why did he take her? It doesn’t make sense. Unless he's gone rogue.”

No. Drex refused to believe that mostly because brykol were very loyal and Drex would lose his shit big time if he thought Shaylin was captured by a rogue water creature.

Fuck.

Several minutes passed before Quil emerged from the water again. “She’s nowhere.”

The male’s voice broke a little and Drex met his panicked stare.

Just then the brykol shot up out of the water and set Shaylin on the grass next to the river. She placed herself between the brykol and Drex, then waved her hands at Quil and Nash. “Don’t hurt him!”

Drex advanced to her and pulled her into his arms, hugging her close. Nash and Quil was there in seconds, each hugging her. Then the three of them rounded on the creature. “You better have a good reason for taking her.”

The brykol hung his head, but Shaylin spoke. “He thought it was the only way to get me to listen to him. He said Xaxhin stole something from the village that was attacked. It was why he struck.”

“What did he take?” Nash asked.

“He didn’t know, just heard Xaxhin talking to someone. This object will give him powers that are stronger than the gods.”

Quil shook his head. “Not possible.”

Drex growled. “It’s possible. However, the only objects that could give him the gods’ powers are the relics, and as far as I know, the Graxecon has them all.”

The brykol shook his head. “Not all of them. There were a few lost right before Xaxhin was put in his deep sleep.”

Dread sank into Drex’s chest. “I bet Xaxhin hid those relics so he could find them later.
