PRIMROSE

When we get back to our own campgrounds, I try to talk to Barret. I need to explain myself to him, and to tell him that I didn’t mean to keep the secret from him for as long as I did. I’m hoping that once he hears my concerns and worries, he’ll understand why I felt the need to hide the truth.

But Barret doesn’t give me the chance to explain.

“Hey, can I—?”

“No,” Barret says, instantly cutting me off. “I don’t want to hear anything that you have to say right now.”

“But if you would just let me explain,” I plead.

Barret whips his head around and scowls at me. “You had plenty of time to explain. Your parents, if I should even call them that, died months ago. You chose not to tell me the truth, and your lie almost caused a volatile conflict between the clans. The time for you to explain your way out of this has passed. If you had come to me as soon as they told you, I would have forgiven you. As Nikolai said, you were only a child when you ran away. But you were not a child when your parents told you what happened. There is no reason, no excuse, for you to have kept this from me. I’ve never done anything to make you afraid of me.”

“I know,” I say, sounding as miserable as I feel. “I was just scared, and I’m sorry for that. But please let me explain things to you now.”

“No. I have things to do today. The mating ceremony is tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes,” he says with a pointed look that cuts like a knife. “It has to be, to ensure you don’t try to run away again.”

Barret’s sarcasm isn’t lost on me. He’s chiding me for lying to him. But I’m not in a joking mood.

Barret instructs several of his shifters to guard my tent and make sure that no one except sanctioned visitors comes in or out. He also tells them not to let me leave my tent without a valid reason. I go and sit in my tent, alone and miserable as I wait for tomorrow and the ceremony. I’m dreading it more than ever.

Nikolai comes to my tent to see me—I can hear his voice outside, pleading to see me. But Barret left the guards strict instructions and none of them are going to defy their alpha. So, they turn Nikolai away. I wish they would let him in. I want to talk to him. I want to talk to anyone who will listen to how sad and miserable I am right now. Tomorrow, I have to get married and I don’t want to. Today I got to see my birth parents for the first time in years, and yet I couldn’t stay to talk with them. I nearly started a battle between the clans, everyone seems upset with me, and I am sequestered to my tent. This is all so terrible.

With the mating ceremony set in stone for tomorrow, Barret has ensured that there will be no more delays.
